This month I’m going to tell you about a book that is very important for me.

More than a book, it’s a journey to the heart of Afghanistan (that country we hear so much but know nothing about), to its history and its pains, with a view on its past and its current fights that is strong enough to change the ideas stuck in our minds.

Khaled Hosseini explains us, through the story of two women whose destinies are connected, the fall of that rich country, its past, the soviet invasion, the war, its long agony, its overcast future.

Among the chaos of the Afghan capital city, Mariam, arrived from the province, illegitimate daughter of a rich salesman, is married to an unfair and violent man and she hopes to calm him down by giving him a son.

But the baby doesn’t come, and will never.

However, one day, Leila, a young neighbour who has just lost her family in an attack and carries inside her the fruit of her disappeared love, enters their lives.

Received by Mariam and her husband, she soon becomes the second wife of this one and Mariam’s enemy.

But the two women finally collaborate with the hope to escape from that life that overwhelms them and run away from Kabul.

Their relationship grows day after day to end up looking like the one a mother would have with her daughter.

In these pages runs a story that is moving, fascinating despite the pain that it produces, common and surprising at the same time.

The author knows how to twiddle the words to make every sentence sound simple but still beautiful and fill the story with true facts that make us open our eyes on what we’ve always believed we were looking at.
