Next year Lufthansa expects a slowdown in economy as well as a more slowly increase in the air freight forwarding.
“It is a difficult year but we expect an increase in the air freight industry of about 3%, the director of Lufthansa-Cargo Otto said.
Although there are signs for a toning-down, it probably will not be as strong as in 2010.
In the first quarter or in the first semester a zero growth is possible, but the second semester will probably be better.
“We do not expect a recession”, the manager said.
Lufthansa-Cargo prepares itself to reduce capacity if the demand will be worse as expected.
“We reduce capacity by 20 to 25% from mid-December to mid-January und could increase that 30%”, Otto reported.
During the last economic crisis, many air freight businesses had big overcapacities.
Lufthansa had even parked part of its fleet of air freighters in the desert of South West USA, since there was no use for them.
“However, this time we do not plan to do such a step,” Otto emphasized.
“The Euro-crisis and the drop of growth in China might have an influence as well.”
