Some people believe that International sport events such as Olympic Games or World Championships have positive role in reduction political tensions between countries and stimulate patriotic emotions.

Personally, I think that this question is a controversial one and is open for debate.

It is a well-known fact that any military actions were forbidden during the Olympic Games in ancient Greece.

Ancient people celebrated this event by competing in power and agility, expressing their sense of national patriotism.

However, nowadays the rule to stop wars during the Olympic Games is not always abided.

It can be illustrated by the National war in Ukraine in present days.

The Ukrainians didn`t stop their war and sportsmen who participated the Olympic Games in Sochi were affected by terrible emotions about the war in their country.

Overwhelming majority of Ukraine citizens couldn`t support their sportsmen because their patriotic emotions were directed to the war.

This example clearly shows that the role of sport glory is significantly lower than the role of national contradictions.

Additionally, popular sport events often cause wide-range fights between fans from opposite countries.

Needless to say that a lot of innocent people suffer from fan`s fights and this point can also increase international tensions.

On the other hand, International sport events unite people from the whole world despite any political contradictions which are temporary forgotten for that period of time.

Taking all these points into consideration, I would say that the role of International sport events is rather insufficient in political sphere.

Definitely, such kinds of events increase the sense of patriotism and glory, however sporting occasions more likely could enlarge International contradictions than reduce them.
