Valentina Tereshkova is a retired Soviet cosmonaut and and the first woman to have flown in space, having been selected from more than four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963.

On the day of the first flight into space she told to relatives that goes to a parachutists competition.

About the flight they learned of the news on the radio.

Her call sign in this flight was Chaika and a phrase that she said before the start: "Hey! The sky!

Take off your hat! ".

The Launch occurred at Baikonur.

Tereshkova endured 48 orbits around the Earth and spent almost three days in space, where she wrote a logbook and made photographs of the horizon, which were later used for the detection of aerosol layers in the atmosphere.

"Vostok-6" landed safely in Baevsky area of the Altai Territory.
