The Ukraine crisis might lead to a new gas conflict - Russian president Vladimir Putin puts pressure on the EU. Moscow.
Five years have passed since the last gas conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, which resulted in a lot of households in the EU having no gas supply.
Since then not much changed about the initial situation.
An alternative to Russian gas and the transit route through the Ukraine is not in sight.
In 2013, about 86 billions m³ of gas flowed through the Ukraine to the west.
The Baltic states Finland and Bulgaria are completely dependant on Moscow's supplies.
Concerned the EU now demands that Russia has to commit to the gas transit.
Russian president Vladimir Putin however, wants the EU to commit to paying off the billions of debts the Ukraine has towards Russia.
For that, he already threathens with possible dangers for the gas transit.
„Of course we ensure to completely fullfill our obligations to our customers“, Putin says.
„But the question is the supply through the Ukraine.“Russia emphasises that after all the neighbouring country already tapped the gas transit pipeline in the past.
The Ukraine is being accused of thiefery which it always rejects.
