Alcock and Brown crossed the Atlantic by air for the first time in 1919.
The first international commercial flights took place between the United States and Canada in 1919.
Planes were an essential component in the battles of the World War II and the Japanese were the first to put them into an aircraft carrier.
The jet aircraft:
-Heinkel He 178: was the first 'operational' jet aircraft tested in 1939.
-Messerschmitt Me 262: was the first 'operational' jet fighter aircraft.
- Bell X-1: in 1947 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound.
- De Havilland Comet: was the first jet airliner and was introduced in 1952.
-Concorde: with the Tu-144 they were the only supersonic jet airliners that have existed.
The Concorde was introduced in 1976 and retired in 2003 because of a unique accident.
The Tu-144 was introduced in 1977 and retired in 1983 due to some accidents and some problems like the cabin noise and airframe failures apart from political influences.
- Boeing 747: was the world's biggest passenger aircraft from 1970 until 2005, when it was surpassed by the Airbus A380.
