  • Mini Essay: Governments’ Rules About Age for Working

  • In the modern world employers cannot decline an applicant for a job because of their age, if it is within the range that governments set in the majority of countries.
  • As a result, there are advantages and disadvantages for employees and society in general.
  • In this essay I am going to discuss the pros and cons of this and give my opinion as well.
  • One cannot argue, that older people are less motivated in their career development than their younger colleagues.
  • Although employers cannot judge a person based on their age, they sometimes try to find other reasons for rejecting candidates.
  • As a result, when an elderly person gets a refusal, they may start to feel miserable.
  • For instance, if this type of people send their resume to a potential employer, they might not receive a reply just because these candidates do not fit with the employer's age requirements.
  • So that person, who sent their resume, begins to feel more and more unwanted with each attempt to find work.
  • On the other hand, this law, which makes illegal to reject on the basis of age, helps all working-age people to have equal rights.
  • Older people have as much valuable experience as younger people and have the motivation to work harder for their career development, so both types of people have reasons to make their work better.
  • So an employer makes judgements not only on the age but also on the person’s abilities and this law provides the ability to do that, in spite of some employers who ignore the law.
  • To conclude, there are different employers who are looking for employees and there are differences in the strategies that they use to find a suitable person for vacancies.
  • In my opinion this law helps people worldwide to feel equal, despite some exceptions with unlawful employers.
