A report of the United Kingdom’s government indicates that does not exist an obvious relation among hard laws and drugs consumption rates.

The research compared the legislation of United Kingdom with 13 countries, such as Portugal, Uruguay and some states of United States.

The final document affirms that, in Portugal, where the possession of little amount of drugs does not result in penal sanctions, decriminalization combined with others policies was able to halt the drug abuse and cases of illness related to them, such as SIDA.

The British secretary of interior, the liberal-democratic Normal Baker, said that the results should alert people about the end of nonsense rhetoric about drugs and change the focus on treatment.

The document was a watershed because since more than 40 years the British government upholds that only tougher sanctions could diminish the drug abuse problem.
