- The journalist: Don’t you think that you should more consider the non euro countries like UK for the reforms concerning the social and economic situation of the EU instead of oblige them to choose between leaving EU and adopting the euro as Mr. Osborne said?

- Mr. Barroso: The chancellor only thinks about the British interests: EU doesn’t have to fit UK, it is UK which has to fit EU.

Moreover, we have to undertake reforms that suit the majority of the European countries - which have most of them the euro- and that not only suit UK.

- The journalist: Yes but the reform may make UK facing the choice of leaving EU or take the euro and it wouldn’t be a good thing.

- Mr. Barroso: Nobody wants the UK to face that choice.

We will do the necessary.

- The journalist: Mr. Osborne has also pointed out the lack of competitiveness of the European countries in comparison with the Asian and South countries.

Will you do something for that?

- Mr. Barroso: That is a main point of our reforms.

However, I think it is important to specify that their growth is slowing down.

- The journalist: According to Angela Merkel, Europe accounts for just over 7% of the world's population and 50% global social welfare spending.

If we rely on Mr. Osborne telling that is too much for the EU which already has competitiveness problems.

- Mr. Barroso: It is absolutely normal that the EU spend much money for welfare than the emerging countries.

It is not comparable; it isn’t at all the same standard of living!

And it is totally caricature to reduce the EU incapacity to face the competitiveness of Asian and South countries to its outcome for welfare.
