Which is the ‘odd one out’ in each group and why?

Because in that case it’s not a possessive “’s” as in other examples.
It stands for “the teacher is absent”.

0 The soldier was hit by a bullet.

0 Three hundred people were killed by the earthquake. Why?
The meaning of the word “by” in this sentence is connected with a place (=near the river), in other cases it was used as a part of Passive Voice.

0 Alan must have been there too.
0 That must have been awful.
0 The thieves must have got in through the window.
+0 I must have something to drink. Why?
Because in all other cases “must have…” was used as an assumption, and in the last one it shows the personal wish.
Identify the mistakes in these sentences, explain the error and supply the corrected version:

– We need inversion when we use indirect speech in case there is a “to be”-question.

I was in China last year.
– Because here the time of trip of mentioned.

I would of liked to have seen that.
I wish I saw it./I would like to see that.

I regret to have damaged your book.
I regret having damaged your book.
– Perfect Tense is not suitable here, we need gerund.
e.
How long do you know Steven?
How long have you known Steven?
– Because you have to show that you know him for a while (you’ve met him, for instance, last year and you still know him).
Finish each of the following sentences in such a way that it is as similar as possible in meaning to the sentences printed before it.
Start with the word given in bold.
a.
You could be arrested for not giving a breath sample to the police.
Refusal of giving a breath sample to the police could make you being arrested.
b.
Philip’s inability to make decisions dates from his accident.
Ever since Philip had an accident, he has inability to make decisions.
c.
I really like her voice but not her choice of songs.
Much more than her choice of songs I like her voice.
d.
He delayed writing the book until he had done a lot of research.

How would you convey the meaning of the following words and phrases to a group of language learners in the classroom?
Do not use a dictionary definition.
Assume a mixed nationality class – so no translation is possible.
to switch (something on)
To turn something on, to make something working.
Imagine yourself in the dark room.
Switching on the light in the dark room makes the light working.
So you SWITCH ON the light and the dark room isn’t dark anymore!
secretary
A person who does paper work, answering phone calls etc. So in case you are a busy businessman you need a SECRETARY to arrange everything for you.
Congratulations!
Imagine it’s your friends birthday.
What will you say to him?
Definitely, you will wish something good to him (f.e. strong health, love etc.) So all those best wishes together are congratulations.
reliable
If you are a reliable person, people can trust you.
It means that you will keep your promises; you will never betray people who trust you etc.
manage to do something (as in ‘she managed to pass the exam’)
being successful in something difficult for you.
For example, you have to be at the office at 9 a.m.
You need one hour by bus to come there.
You’d left your home at 8.20 but you were at office at 9 a.m. anyway. Miracle? Maybe.
Anyway, you MANAGED TO be at office at 9 a.m. 6.
WORKING IN A GROUP
What experience have you had of working in groups?
All my experience of working in groups I have already described in the first part of application form.
Besides, I worked in groups in volunteering project in Ukraine and Czech Republic, I played in a music band etc.
