  • Soldiers and journalists

  • Today I'm going to talk about the notion myths and heroes.
  • A myth is a traditional, ancient story dealing with supernatural ancestors or heroes, that transmits ideals of society.
  • It can also be a person or a thing whose existence is fictional or unproven.
  • A hero is a man of great courage or ability, admired and regarded as a model or ideal.
  • We can wonder, can soldiers and journalists be considered as heroes during war time while doing their jobs ?
  • Soldiers can easily be considered as heroes during the war time.
  • Indeed, they are fighting for a country, in a direct way, and are exposed to danger every second.
  • Soldiers is hardly seen as a « normal job ».
  • Risking their lives constantly, having the responability of a whole country's security...
  • The important number of soldiers who died is also a point that makes us believe in soldiers as heroes.
  • More than their capacities, it's their courage and their love for their country that affect people's opinion.
  • They have to be apart of their family and friends, to fight for their homeland under tough conditions.
  • The rôle of journalist as heroes is a bit more complicated.
  • They can be seen as heroes in war time because they risk their life to keep a whole nation informed.
  • They have to get the closest to the battle to take informations and this can sometimes be as dangerous as being a soldier.
  • No matter what, they have to be professional and stay neutral.
  • Because of them, a country's people can be full of hope and motivated, or on the contrary depressed and afraid.
  • Thus, the rôle of journalists during war time can be major.
  • But is it really a good thing to consider soldiers as heroes ?
  • The problem of being called a hero refers to a character, a protagonist, something in fiction, not to a person.
  • It's like heroes are invincibles.
  • However, soldiers are defending their country with fear and pain, and in the battle they try to survive rather than meet the challenge.
  • Being at war can be a horrible experience and cause trauma, and most of soldiers have to forced themselves everyday to do their job, they don't really ask for it.
  • Concerning journalists, it's another kind of problem.
  • A lot of medias during war have been lying to the population and doing censorship.
  • Most of the time, it's to hide awful news to people and keep them motivated, so it is for a good purpose, but can someone who lies and hide horrors still be called a hero ?
  • Furthermore, they are only a few journalists who call themselves « heroes ».
  • The recent event of Charlie Hebdo can makes us think about it.
  • Gerard Biard said « We're not heroes.
  • Were just journalists.
  • We're just cartoonists.
  • We are not meant to be killed.
  • » Yes, being a journalist can be dangerous, even in relative peace time.
  • But do they still are invincible characters ?
  • As soldiers, they just are humans who try to do their jobs, regardless the danger.
  • We can also think about the critical moment when a journalist is kidnapped and becomes a hostage ; lots of soldiers come to deliver him.
  • Does it mean then that a journalist's life is more important than a soldier's life ?
  • When someone is hold as hostage and that hundreds of soldiers are sent, does it mean that a soldier is just like, a tin soldier, like a toy ?
  • So, to sum up, I'd say that soldiers as well as journalists can easily be considered as heroes because they show great courage, they take risks everyday for their country, and they have really strain jobs.
  • But, they are indeed just doing their jobs, and see them as heroes can be a dangerous mistake, who makes us think they're almost not human, meanwhile they sometimes can be used as tools of war.
