when you look up to sky at night, you'll see bright spots. are they stars or planets? it is easy to understand with this method: if the light blinks then it is a star. whereas, if the light is constant what you is a planet. that's it! stars are really far away from us. and this is extra individual information: when you see the planet, if it is colour like red, it should be Mars!
