We can divide Joyce's literary production in two period.

First period:The first period is market by a realistic technique.

The plot of the works is linear, the syntax is logical and the simple language used by the author reflects the everyday speech.

"Dubliners"represents the most important work of this period.It is a collection of 15 stories written in 1905 , expect for "The dead" written in 1907.

Dubliners speaks about the monotonous life in Ireland and Joyce chooses to describe Dublin because he thinks that it is the centre of the paralysis of Ireland."The dead" is the last story of "Dubliners".In this story Joyce makes a study of the inner life of his characters , using the "stream of consciousness" throught the interior monologue.

The second period of Joyce literary production is the period of esperimenti on, rich in symbolism and allegory.

The language is more completa and the syntax is not logical.

Ulysses represent this period.

This book speaks about a single day, June 16 1904 of the life of three Dubliners.

The main characters are:Stephen Dedalus , who corresponds to Telemachus and who is Joyce alter ego.

Leopold Bloom, a middle-age man who wanders around Dublin like Ulysses around Mediterranean.

Molly Bloom , Leopold's wie, who corresponds to Ulysses' wife Penelope.
