An article from the guardian published the 20th October 2015, shows one of the US prison system's failures.
Today, America has the biggest prison population in the world.
Ground of the democracy and the human rights, the United States also have dirty secrets.
In her article, Victoria Law describes harrowing stories of medical neglect and brutal mistreatment suffered by pregnant inmates.
Indeed, a 2004 survey found that 3 % of women in federal prisons and 4 % of those in state prisons were pregnant upon arrival.
However, several women described their miscarriages due to the dangerous lack of medical care.
They received no medical attention for their pregnancies and during the delivery.
Handcuffed during the delivery, waiting in pains without any help, in constant hungry during the pregnancy … The restrictions and confinement inherent in prisons can make pregnancy and birthing traumatic.
They often lose their infant in a pre-term birth.
Even if the delivery went well, some of these mothers spent only 24 hours with their newborn.
After that, they are taken back to prison without knowing where their child is going.
Then, after 15-22 months, the infant is not placed with a relative but with an adoptive family.
The government pressures the mother to sign away her parental rights.
The journalist Will Potter recently took part in a TED meeting.
He described the prisoners' treatment inside the Communications Management Unit (CMUs).
This is “the most secretive and experimental prison units in the US, for so-called “second-tier” terrorists”.
These prisoners are limited in various way: in their phone calls, in their letters or even during the visits.
They cannot even hug their family or friends: a bulletproof glass making a barrier.
If the majority of these prisoners are Muslim, some of them are “balancers”.
They help balance out the racial numbers, in hopes of deflecting law suits.
It includes animal rights and environmental activists.
Their are sent there only because they are “domestic” terrorists and have “anti-government beliefs”.
The Bill of Rights, the Constitution, freedom of speech … Let us not merely adopt these rights but make them real and respected by all.
