Something that promotes this idea of uniqueness is the well-spread ignorance among American citizens of their own history and its direct relation with Europe.The defenders of this exceptionalism try to dissociate the US from Europe, even when the most basic notions of the Declaration of independence (All men are created equally and the consent of the governed) came from Locke Hobbes’ ideas and the age of enlightenment.

These ideals that make them supposedly unique have not been respected neither within the US nor abroad.

The Indian genocide, slavery and segregation of black people, prison overcrowding, overseas interventions overthrowing democratic systems; are historic facts that contradict the ideals that they say to follow.

However, letting aside exaggerations and patriotism, the US had a time when it was considerably exceptional, Godfrey Hodgson addressed this issue in his book The Myth of American Exceptionalism and says:
