  • Please, correct me!

  • Nowadays this idea of uniqueness is due to a mix of propaganda and the well-spread ignorance about the origins of American culture, that make American people think of the US as something completely different from the rest of the world.
  • However its birth was not something exceptional, it was just another colony of the vast British Empire.
  • Many of these patriots try to disassociate the US from Europe, even though their country is the direct result of the European political and philosophic history; as we can notice, even the most basic notions of the Declaration of independence (All men are created equally and the consent of the governed) came from Locke Hobbes’ ideas.
  • The arrogance of the US is not something new, it behaves like all the others big European Empires that have ever existed, trying to get economic and political control overseas; in this case not by creating colonies but military bases.
  • The history of the US is not the best example of moral purity nor free nation.
  • The Indian genocide, slavery and segregation are historical examples of the racism that is still a current social problem among others such as the extreme income inequality or the prison overcrowding.
  • As regards the American search of liberty abroad, we can notice that the US has a long list of inhuman acts such as being the first country to use nuclear weapons against another nation, the use of chemical weapons or the actual bombing of civilians with drones.
  • So now that we have seen that the US is not that prefect, we may ask ourselves, why does Obama insist that (as he said) “The United States is and will remain the one indispensable nation in the world”?
  • What is this spreading freedom all about?
