  • WHAT STAND IN THE WAY OF WOMEN BEING EQUAL TO MEN?

  • In class we talked about location and form of power.
  • First of all, I want to define these term.
  • A location is a particular position or place.
  • « Power » is the ability to control others, events, or resources; the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition.
  • This of course leads to conflict between those who have power and those who don’t.
  • To illustrate the notion, we talk about genders role.
  • The aim of this was to realize that they are a lot of stereotype who make inequality between man and woman or girl and boy.
  • Indeed, we have seen six documents to know must about this idea.
  • Gender discrimination is a fact very present in the word even if they are country where gender discrimination is most present than other country.
  • We have seen an ad from Kenwood Chef in 1960’s.
  • The husband in front of his wife who is leaning on him.
  • The second document is during which children aged 3or 4 are asked questions about gender roles.
  • The third document is « Man Up » are three document who talk about masculinity by the BWSS campaign.
  • The fourth document is Global gender gap (report 2015) a report who wants to provide a tool to track gender equality around the world.
  • What stand in the way that they are inequality between men and wimen?
  • What stand in the way of women being equal to men?
  • Firstly, we will see the image that society show about man, secondly the image that people have about women and thirdly the fact that people put into question their ideas.
  • In class we have seen that they are person who has idea about man role.
  • Indeed, the man is the stronger and the protector.
  • In the ad Kenwood chef, the husband is in front of his wife who is leaning on him.
  • The husband is in a power position, he is the leader in the couple and he has the buying power.
  • He provides his family with what they need.
  • The slogan is rather ambiguous since the word « chef » may refer to the kitchen aid as well as to the man of the house: the breadwinner.
  • We have the practice to listen sentence like: « Be a man don’t cry ».
  • As if man don’t cry, man are too strong to have emotions.
  • To understand better that they are an image about man who was developed in the document children and gender roles we can see that they are toy for boy.
  • Toys who are suposely only for boy because you need to be strong for « a car » or a « sword ».
  • In an d from man up we see a young boy who make a position of fighter and he nose bleed.
  • That is to say man are not scared about danger.
  • The expression « man up » mean: Be brave or thought enough to deal with an unpleasant situation.
  • Secondly we have seen that they are an image about women.
  • The women is fragil and depend to the man.
  • To make clear this idea they are the document Kenwood chef.
  • In Kenwood chef the women is leaning on his husband.
  • The wife is depicted as dependent on her husband.
  • She is leaning on him that is to say she is counting on him.
  • The sentence « cook that’s what wives are for » mean that wife’s job is take care of his family but thanks to his husband because she depends to him.
  • To illustrate gender role, we have seen another document: Children and gender roles.
  • We learn that from a very early age, children are aware of their gender identity.
  • The toy for girl are pink and very stereotypical.
  • Young girl has baby and fake kitchen to be like his mother that’s to say women are only here to take care of their babies, cook, and clean up the house.
  • In effect Thea Mc Donalds explains that girls toys are not encourraging creativity or imagination, they rather encourage passivity.
  • However, person acknowledge the discrimination against gender role.
  • We have seen a video on which we are shown a little girl who vehemently denounces the usual stereotypes associated with toys.

  • Mrs Donals criticizes schools for reproducing gender stereotype(training periods, restricted choice of subjects).In another document we have seen a young boy attacks the fact that they are toy for girl and toy for boy.
  • For this girl , children have to make a choice about toys with what they wants to play.
  • To conclude, we can deduce that the cultural environment and society have a major impact , an influence on the way that childrens react but also in stereotypes that person made.
