Cuba crisis
- The cuban missile crisis took place during the cold war in October 1962.
- First of all, in 1959, Fidel Castro seized power on the Island of Cuba.
- He decided to nationalize the American companies settled in Cuba and chased out his Cuban opponents.
- The Americans replied to these nationalisations with an embargo which meant the stop of economic, financial and trade relations with Cuba.
- This situation would later push Cuba into the arms of the Soviets.
- In the middle of the month of October 1962, American spy-planes discovered that missiles directly threatening the integrity of the United States were installed by the U.S.S.R. on the island of Cuba.
- Khrouchtchev, the Soviet leader at that time installed these missiles to protect Cuba from a possible American invasion because in 1961 they had tried a landing but failed.
- On October the 22nd of the same year, president Kennedy ordered the naval encirclement of the island.
- Then, began a period of extreme tensions between the two world's leading powers.
- Finally, the USSR surrendered and the crisis was solved by the withdrawal of the Soviet missiles based in Cuba, compensated by the withdrawal of the americans missiles based in Turkey.
- Furthermore, the U.S. made a commitment not to invade Cuba.
