Spaces and exchanges
Today I'll talk about the notion Spaces and exchanges, by trying to answer the question : what make people go live in another country, leaving their own ?
I'll start with the economics reasons, and then the politicals ones.
Migrations are often driven by economics reasons as to flee poverty, unemployment...
These migrants come in search of a better life : America and Europe are perceived as « lands of opportunities ».
For example, people going to the United States sometimes believe in the American Dream, which is the chance to succeed in life, to improve one's position financially and socially, to find a job and be able to live instead of only surviving...
America attracted lots of migrants ; some of them are called by the americans « self made man » : someone who rises from poverty through work.
But the travel of these people is sometimes very long and difficult : we read in class a text, in the which the narrator's grandfather recounds the story of his trip to America ; he went from Ukraine to Germany, Netherlands, where finally he found a boat.
Now I'll talk about another reason of immigration : politics.
The immigrants can flee their own country to escape wars, civil wars, persecutions...
There are lots of Syrians in Turkey, Lebanon (Liban) or European countries today because of the civil war there.
There are also people in dictatorships who want to escape from their country, not to be jailed or executed when there's death penalty.
To conclude, I 'd say that many reasons can motivate immigrants to leave their own country, as the hope of a better life, unemployment, wars...
But immigrants can face problems in their « new country » : for example, the can be victims of racism, or not find a job.
