I choose to show you a painting called The Devil by Jerome Bosch.
First of all, we need to speak about this artist before describing the picture.
So, Jerome Bosch lived in Holland and when he was a children he saw his village brunt, indeed art experts say that the devil never left him.
That’s why all his paintings represent the devil, the hell and fire.
Moreover, he lived in the sixteenth century in Europe and the Christian religion was very present.
Now we can speak about this painting.
We can see seven forms of monstrosity.
They all have color like orange, red, blue, green, grey, yellow.
Moreover the creatures have some similar particularities like corns and tails.
On their wretches there are thorns and they have four fingers.
We notice that they had hooked noses and long tongues.
Two of the creatures are winged and seven creatures are harming a man who can’t defend himself.
With informations I gave before, we can try to interpret this art piece.
Indeed, the artist saw his village burnt and he was a Christian.
Then, the creatures are seven to represent the seven deadly sins (The Pride, The Avarice, The Envy, Anger, The Lust, The laziness, Greed).
Jerome Bosch represent the punishment of this man
Thereby we can suppose that the man on the center of the painting didn’t respect the seven deadly sins, he tempered with God, like Eve did it with the apple because she didn’t resist to the envy.
This piece shows us the risks we take when we succumb to one of the seven deadly sins, and dissuade us from doing a mistake
