The VR reveals for the Jaguar's first-ever electric car below our mind (what do you mean?)
Virtual reality is a fully rendered technology that places you in an environment.
There are low-rend offerings that use smartphones which actually are surprisingly good.
High-end versions use high-end PCs.
They now can create experiences that are ever harder to distinguish from reality.
When it came to launching a future facing vehicle like I-Pace, Jaguar needed a car launch that went above the normal conventions of previous automotive launches.
The car company needed something that equaled the car’s product ambitions.
And what better way to do that with virtual reality.
What Jaguar pulled off is something different – For the automotive industry and for VR.
I had a fascinating experience.
I got to see and experience the new jaguar I-Pace.
I didn’t just get to see the car.
I got to experience aspects of the vehicle viscerally, without actually getting into it.
The entire experience was interactive, letting you click on the trigger on the controller and independently move back and forth to view different angles of the car.
(Thank you for Trigger)
In the beginning of the tour everyone found themselves transported to space up to where space station orbits.
That gave us amazing, almost god-like view as they walked us through the birth of car.
There were many scene changes throughout the experience, each one informing you about different key features of the vehicle model.
Then we were transported to the interior of the car.
Features all presented themselves in a gradual and interactive way.
And to finish it all off, the outside environment appeared.
Also among this Jaguar’s top designer was explaining why each feature existed.
Firms like Jaguar are working to figure out how to get people more excited about new cars.
Their project enables a space in the dealership where a prospective buyer can put on a VR headset and then see the full range of options.
Options like interior, exterior, colors, and other features.
They can figure out, before paying for it, whether the car is worth their money.
We’ve seen it all before, automotive companies using virtual reality as a marketing tool, most of which are more gimmicks than experiences.
But what Jaguar did for this launch goes beyond just a car show stunt, instead bringing you into a story experiences that you’ll likely never forget – creating a powerful, lasting and authentic memory for us all – and hopefully sell some cars in the process.
