The epigram is a composition which by its very nature lends itself well to being anthologized: is short, in order to survive, must be gathered into a larger work.

Despite being a genre closely related to the reading (as an autonomous composition born with the most archaic Greek literature at a stage yet oral-aural communication), the epigram had a remarkable development only since the birth of the roll.

Therefore, its development can be studied not only from the point of view of the content and the vocabulary, but also through the analysis of the relationship of the genre with the evolution of the books circulation, which became relevant especially since the fourth century BC.
