By 2050 the world population will reach 9 billion people, but we will lack of spaces to produce enough food for everyone, since there are fewer and fewer agricultural lands According to scientists a solution would be to eat insects.
Actually there are currently 2 billion people eating insects every day, especially in Asia, Africa, Australia and in South America.
Most of these people belong to ethnic groups.
However in the Occident we are quite disgusting of insects although each French would eat 500 grams of insects per year.
One of the reason is that we eat the cochineal which comes from the insect of the same name.
Another reason is that some vegetables and fruits are contaminated by insects, such as the fig.
When the wasp pollinates the fig it stays prisoner.
However insects they have many advantages.
To begin with, there are almost 1 900 species of edible insects in the world.
As for example there are: crickets, caterpillars, ants, beetles, flies, termites.
They also have nutritional interests.
Insects contain a lot of nutrients, especially proteins.
Some species have got three times more proteins than the conventional meat (crickets for example).
Insects are high in unsaturated fatty acid which are better for our body (Omega-3-fatty acid).
They contain as much as good fat than the fish.
And they also contain amino acid, notably tryptophan and lysine that we can’t find in our food.
Finally they are more sustainable to produce than the conventional meat.
Indeed bug farms require less lands and water than the cattle.
It emits less greenhouse gases.
There are different ways of consuming insects.
They can be boiled, roasted, smoked or mixed.
But in the Occident the objective is to make insects appetizing.
That’s why there are often powered so we can introduce them in cakes or pies for instance.
However it seems that they are more successful during the pre-dinner in our countries.
To conclude insects might be our future diet if we can overcome our fear.
But most of all they could be a solution to the growing malnutrition in the world, and they could solve nutritional deficiency problems.
Nevertheless it seems that some species would cause allergies.
Insects are not well known since there aren’t a lot of scientific researches on the subject.
