  • Prince Charles visits Amatrice’s disaster area Mayor Pirozzi does not go there with him “I will go back down there again when the historical centre is rebuilt,” said the mayor The heir apparent of England, during his visit to Italy alongside his wife Camilla, walked down Corso Umberto I, the inner part of Amatrice’s historical centre, which had been shattered by an earthquake last summer.

  • I’ll be returning to the historical centre when it’s rebuilt.” Charles reached the Civic Tower, a building which symbolizes the Arezzian town.
  • He was taken there by the chief of Civil Protection, Mr. Fabrizio Curcio.
  • He stated “ what we are really concerned about is preserve our symbols.
  • They must not die out, as they indicate our sense of belonging.” Mr. Curcio was referring to the importance of rebuilding the churches and the most important buildings of the town.
  • Prince Charles subsequently visited the operation centre, which is a tent, where the institutions involved in managing this emergency and in the rebuilding phase are working.
  • The prince held a long conversation with the rescuers asking for information about the work conditions and the priority level.
  • The next stop was made at the monument commemorating 297 victims of the earthquake, including three British citizens.
  • As a last stop, he visited the accommodations allocated to the displaced people.
