  • India wakes up populist and reactionary

  • Demagogy, xenophobia, religion.
  • Narendra Modi has stirred up the patriotic pride, setting himself against Islam and the West.
  • India went through another political upheaval in mid-March, the second one after Narendra Modi’s victory in 2014.
  • Bharatiya Janata Party, nationalist as well as traditionalist, already in charge in Delhi, has triumphally won the administrative elections in five states, with a unique outcome.
  • Particularly, in Uttar Pradesh, the most crowed Indian state, and the most important with respect to its strategical location as well as image, it had never occurred that a party would have an overwhelming victory with the majority: it obtained almost 40% of votes and 80% of the seats, lagging behind the Indian National Congress party that considered Uttar Pradesh its stronghold.
  • According to some analysts, the victory should not be ascribed completely to BJP’s worthiness, but to the opposition’s ineptitude, which was unable to hire trustworthy candidates.
  • Nevertheless, the outcome doesn’t change.
  • The Indian National Congress party reached the lowest level, communists disappeared and also the other opposition parties don’t exist anymore.
