  • Why is there so much litter scattered in the streets of Rome?

  • Why is there so much litter scattered in the streets of Rome?
  • There are many causes, such as two long vacations, the difficulties the composting plants are facing, and a below standard waste collection For a few days, the Roman streets have been scattered with litter again, as it’d happened so many times in the past years yet.
  • The situation is getting worse in the neighbourhoods of Tor Sapienza, at west, and Nuovo Salario, in the north of the town, but some discomforts have been recorded in other areas, also.
  • Mayor Virginia Raggi has acknowledged the harsh criticisms of these days and yesterday her staff came up with a plan to deal with this serious situation.
  • At the same time, Raggi criticized the Democratic Party, the former administration and the region, since, according to her, they are doing very little to work this out.
  • The Democratic Party arranged a demonstration to be held next Sunday, in many areas of the city.
  • The demonstrators will clean up streets and parks (even if it’s not that clear where all this rubbish will be collected) The Roman litter issue has a long past though.
  • The city started recycling after many years compared to other Italian and European cities, whereas, the composting plants are supervised by Manlio Cerrni, a fat cat who has been suspected for many years of managing his plants in a controversial way.
  • It must be added that AMA, the company managing the city litter, had some financial issues and was about to go bankrupt a couple of years ago.
