  • GOING FOR TAPAS

  • Dear, Mr Smith: I am writing to send you my article for the school magazine about a custom in my country.
  • The cuisine of Spain is one of the most famous parts of Spanish culture.
  • People come to Spain (from San Sebastian to Seville) with food as the main lure.
  • But many don't understand it.
  • A 'tapa' is not a type of food; it's a way of eating it.
  • Tapas are small portions, but they can be of anything.
  • And to 'go for tapas' (tapear in Spanish) does not mean ordering a lot of dishes in one restaurant (though, of course, you can), but eating a different tapa in each bar.
  • It would be impossible to list all the tapas from the rich Spanish food culture, but the usual top Spanish tapas around the country could be for instance: Spanish bravas (fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce), Spanish omelette (eggs, potato, onion and olive oil), cheese, ham, etc… Spain has a huge regional diversity and even the eating culture can be quite different, therefore also the tapas.
  • You can find seafood like boiled octopus, prawns, a great variety of rice, excellent meat, and tomato soup… The east coast of Spain is most famous for its rice dishes (not just paella), the Atlantic coast is known for its seafood and steaks while Andalusia for local specialities, such as gazpacho.
  • Everyone who visits Spain wants to go for tapas (to try tapas).
  • Spain's unique tapas culture is the envy of the world.
