  • Brexit

  • The word Brexit is a term which refers to Britain's exit from the European union after a referendum on 23rd of June 2016.
  • Britain got a new prime minister, Theresa May.
  • She was against Brexit during the referendum campaign but is now in favor of it because she says it is what the British people want.
  • However, there still are supporters and detractors of Britain's decision.
  • Being a member of the European Union ensures the so-called four freedoms: the movement of goods, services, people and money.
  • One of the reasons why britain decided to exit is because it wanted to control immigration.
  • Being part of the European Union meant it had to accept the free circulation of people without limiting it.
  • Foreign people represented an excessive weight for public services, transports and healthcare.
  • Now that Britain is out from the European Union, it can reinforce controls and protect more the country's security.
  • But the exit from the European Union also had its negative consequences.
  • First of all, Britain reduced commercial trade with European countries and commercial costs increased because there is free trade only among member nations.
  • This led to a decrease of productivity and damaged also European Union's commerce.
  • In addition, European countries have to deposit more money to brussels in order to compensate for previous British contribution.
  • The value of the pound fell the day after the referendum and prices of goods rised.
  • Brexit also has some potential long-term consequences, which would affect more than just the people living in the country.
  • It could be problematic for some industries and companies, because it could have an impact on regulations, trade and taxes.
  • Also, the European union might lose additional countries.
  • For example, some French politicians are pushing for a "Frexit".
  • Of course, the UK could also lose Scotland, which voted in favor of staying in the European Union, while Northern Ireland might want to break off in order to remain a part of the European Union.
  • I think these could be potential consequences which could be added to the ones already existing.
