Training for proficiency test: Arts in education
- These two texts raise the issue of the importance of teaching arts in schools.
- This essay aims to summarise the key points and evaluate them.
- Schools tend to be a place where basic academic needs are taught.
- Even though counting, writing and reading skills are paramount to become a responsible and autonomous citizen, children should have the possibility to discover and practise other types of skills through various artistic expressions, which are part and parcel of a healthy emotional development in childhood.
- The main issue stems from financial restrictions imposed by government officials who take decisions according to a sheer economic point of view without taking into consideration the well-being of the pupils.
- Furthermore, as researchers confirmed recently, practising an art leads to learn other abilities such as working with a team or focusing on one task at a time and thus, help to achieve academic tasks as well.
- Unfortunately, if budget is the priority, the public schools will not be able to provide arts education and parents who can afford it will choose a private education or will pay for extra scholar activities to assure a proper artistic education to their offsprings.
- Consequently, children whose parents will not have the capacity to pay for this kind of education will not have access to arts and will have more difficulties at school, broadening the gap between social classes.
- In conclusion, arts education is of paramount importance in schools and should be considered as a basic subject like maths, reading and writing.
