Nineteenth century restorations
This document is an article from David Bonsord.
The author aims at showing that three paintings of the National Gallery were damaged by a former restoration, during [pas « in »] the nineteenth century : The Sultan Mehmet II by Bellini, The Virgin and Child with Saint George and Saint Anthony Abbot by Pisanello, and The Virgin and Child Embracing by Sassoferrato.
They were acquired by Sir Eastlake for the museum.
He asked an italian restorer to work on the two first canvas.
But this man repainted those almost entirely : only a few original pieces of canvas still remain !
About the last painting, the author explains that there are excessive overpaintings in the canvas, put during the restoration.
