Language is a way to communicate each other.

There are four kinds of languages that are mother tongue, second language, foreign language and international language.

Indonesia is Indonesian mother tongue, yet English is a foreign language that commonly used in education and business system in Indonesia.

According to research by the British Council, English is spoken as a native language by around 375 million and around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language.

There are some benefits of learning English as foreign language for non-native speakers like us.

The first benefit is about social relationship.

Learning English as a foreign language expands our networks and contacts.

It will be difficult for us to communicate with foreigner with different languages if we don’t know English well.

For example on social network sites, there are many people around the world who speak different languages.

It will be difficult for us to make a friend with them because we don’t understand their language.

Another example is that when we are travelling to different countries that most restaurant,hotels and store employee are speaking a different language.

We will be difficult to communicate each other if we don’t know their language.

English is the best way to communicate with them and bridge the different language.

The second benefit is developing knowledge.

According to research by the British Council, 90% of information around the world is written in English.

Besides, most of movies and TV programs around the world are subtitled in English that sometimes it’s difficult for us to get the subtitle in our language.

Knowing English can allow you to understand the content and what the speaker say.

We also can develop our knowledge about another culture and custom by knowing how people speak and the diction.

Understanding the different culture can enrich our understanding of different preception to see the world.

The third benefit is carrier opportunities.

A study of bilingualism and income in Canada between 1971 and 1991, Christofides and Swidinsky report that French-speaking Canadians who invested in learning English income increased substantially compared to those who did not because there are many job vacancies that usually impress you to speak English well because the company is looking for someone who can speak more than one language especially English and they offer pay better for them because they will interact with people around the world and participate in international business.

Different language is not an obstacle to communicate each other as long as we know how to bridge the differences.

English is one of way to bridge the difference language in social relationship, developing knowledge by reading the book or watching movie, and looking for carrier opputunities.
