  c'etait un singulier personnage,un de ces quidams depraves et eneptes qui savent puortant faire leur petit bonhomme de chemin et ne s'entendent,d'ailleurs,qu'a cela.

I wonder wether it means that : This is  one of  strange type persons, who  are depraved and muddleheaded. They assume to be good and innocent men and  only can do that hypocrisy. Or  it means that: ............. and  are understood by other people only  to this point
