What's the best way to improve comprehension?

Hi! I was just wondering, if you have to give a tip to someone to make him improve in English comprehension, what would you suggest?

My English is self taught for the most part and i noticed that my reading/writing "skills" are WAY better than my spoken English, also i understand American English better than the real English..

Reading book/comics helped me a lot, is watching films/series in English a good way to improve?
