Soviet and russian movies

Which russian and soviet films you recommend to see to your pen-pals who are studying russian language?

It's wellknown that most of movies touch many various aspects of life in former USSR and in modern Russia which probably are incomprehensible for them.

I don't mean a movies based on classic literature. What can you say?

BTW nobody has mentioned "17 moments of spring" (a spy drama)

There are 12 series with  a smart  plot, perfect actors  and a  good language.

I recommend to see movies  made in Soviet times (from 60s to 80s). The modern ones mostly  have considerably  lower quality from the artistic point of  view.

I guess I'll necro this old thread since its still on the first page rather than start a new one.

I just recently saw "9 POTA" (9th Company)  which is a very good Russian war movie about Afghanistan. Quite violent like all war movies but  very good.  The entire movie is on YouTube divided up into 12 minute segments. Unfortunately it did not have English subtitles.  While I could  not understand the language, as a former soldier myself, I feel I understood every bit of the movie.

For there's nothing better than cartoons! And I'll tell the same that Ahaur had told: "Whinnie the Pooh" and "There lived a dog" is what you have to watch if you want to know about Russia. =)))[br][edited by Elanorielle on 2005-11-04 13:02:42]
