The author's communicative aim is to arouse us a feeling of anxiety for representatives of two different generations and the huge chasm of misunderstanding between them.

The theme of this story is family relationships.

The author raises different acute problems between parents and their children:for example, a problem of misunderstanding, a problem of intrust and also situations where a good reputation is more important than an internal experience of a child.

At the beginning of this story the author describes the conversation between Sergant Gailey and a father of a young gay - Mr. Smeeth.

Mr Smeeth's son works on people who steal cars.

George is called to the police station as a witness.

The author describes how Smeeth tries to talk with his son in order of resolve this unpleasant incident.

Especially the author draws our attention to that the whole family absolutely doesn't know about the case of George either he didn't want to give his secret to father.

Based on this, I can assume that he is a very strict father and husband.

When he receives information about the location of his son he immediately goes there.

After that the conversation takes place between them.

George explains to his father that he didn't know about the machinations of his acquaintances.but Smeeth requires to retire.

Despite such authority Smeeth feels the bitterness and hatred that his son was hidden from him general problem of their family.
