- The United Kingdom and Spain, two old nations that have been rivals in many occasions throughout their long history, have many historic factors in common.
- Both are a nation state resulting from the union of multiple ancient kingdoms.
- Both have the oldest reigning monarchies of Europe.
- These two Imperial nations also had an important role in the European expansion throughout the world, leaving a cultural legacy in many modern nations, especially in America.
- Both countries have produced two of the most well-known writers worldwide: Shakespeare and Cervantes.
- It is a noteworthy coincidence that both authors died the same month of the same year, 1616.
- Most importantly, Spain and the United Kingdom are both the place of birth, from the perspective of their international projection, of the most widely spread languages of our times: English and Spanish.
- It is not a surprise that having so many aspects in common in their historical trajectory and national identity, the British and the Spaniards always shown interest in getting to know each other better.
- People in the United Kingdom have always been very curious of Spain and, despite their rivalry with Spain several times in their history, the British admire the Spaniards.
- That is what the growing number of British people visiting Spain each year and even those who choose to live there and, most importantly, the British Hispanism tell us.
- The British Hispanism has a long history in the British academic and cultural world.
- It has contributed substantially to the the knowledge of Spanish history and culture all over the world and also made a significant contribution for the Spaniards to know their country better.
