I've been reading a book for children and found o ut I am terrible with vocabulary.
Here some sentences I need help with :
To make an appalling row means "faire un bruit de tous les diables" in other words being very noisy.
To show a sly grin would means you have something, not very good in mind, while smiling in French un sourire narquois.
This one I do not understand at all : "Billy's every word plumed the air like smoke".
For the context poor Billy is looking at a person eating non cooked pork (I spare you the full description) and feels squeamish.
A friend tells him he is squeamish and Billy says he is not as he is good hunting, fishing, gutting fish and butchering steers, but he prefers cooked meat.
By the way I do not get the difference between pig, pork and hog.
Is it like in French Pig (le cochon) is the leaving animal, pork (le porc) the one we eat and hog would be... wild ?
Thanks for your help.
