The bar chart illustrates the telephone usage in UK by three call categories (local – landline, national and international – landline, mobiles) between 1995 and 2002.
Units are given in billions of minutes.
Overall, most of the calls in each year of the described period were made using fixed line phones and, moreover, the majority of these calls were local calls.
Nevertheless, local calls saw the tendency to reduce in the last four years of the period, whereas mobile calls became more popular.
In 1995 people un UK spoke more than 70 billion minutes in local calls via fixed line.
This number grew up until 1999 when it peaked at 90 billion minutes, and in 2002 it returned to the value of 1995.
The amount of time spent on national and international calls increased steadily over these years from just below 40 to slightly above 60 billion minutes.
In terms of mobile calls, less than 5 billion minutes of calls were registered in 1995.
Then this time exceeded 10 billion minutes in 1999 and after that it boomed to about 45 billion minutes in 2002.
