Why is the tomato red?
- First you have to know that white (sun)light consists of different wavelengths.
- If your eye catch light of a specific wavelength you see a specific colour.
- The colour you see depends on the wavelength.
- Light can also consist of different wavelengths – if that is the case and your eye catch such light you see the mix of both colours.
- If your eye catch light, which consist of every wavelength you see white.
- “Seeing black” means your eye catch no light.
- What happens when light hits a surface of some object, like a tomato?
- Then every wavelength is absorbed except the wavelength which we see as red.
